A few years ago we created a custom WordPress website for Atlanta photographer Laura Barnes. It was filled with handdrawn touches that really showed off Laura’s personality and style but it wasn’t the easiest to update. We were excited when she came back to us this year to turn our Positano template into her new site! We love the way she added color to the clean look of Positano to create an elegant yet approachable website that feels entirely Laura!
Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get started in photography?
I studied fine arts in college and received my BFA in photography. I was unsure how I wanted to use my degree, however during my last semester in college two of my close friends were planning their weddings. Watching them go through the planning process was my light-bulb moment! From there I knew being a wedding photographer (and small business owner!) was the path I wanted to take. I officially started my business in May 2011, and the years have flown by! I feel blessed to truly have my dream job!
Why did you decide to redesign your website?
My previous website was a custom WordPress site that Krista designed. I really loved the style of it, but I missed being able to make major updates/changes myself. (Prior to the site Krista designed, I used ProPhoto). I found myself not keeping my website up to date, which was a poor reflection on my photography and business. I love Krista’s design style, which made switching to a template from Davey and Krista’s store with ShowIt an easy decision. The was a bit of a learning curve with learning a new platform, but the videos Krista offers are great! I also have a few close photo friends that use ShowIt and they were kind enough to help by answering any questions I had.
What is your favorite part of your new site?
The wedding galleries! I really love the Pinterest like way the images are displayed. I decided to feature weddings as a full event in lieu of one gallery featuring numerous weddings (like on my previous website.) I think the new style flows much better and really provides potential clients with a great way to view images.
Is there anything else you think people considering re-designing their website should know?
It’s probably going to take much longer than you think! Re-designing your website isn’t a process you should rush, everything takes time. I think it’s important to make sure things are done well. I’ve always been told to think of my website as a 2 a.m. handshake, and really try to keep that in mind when thinking about my website.
