Bringing Your Spouse on Full-Time

Husband & Wife Team

Part One

"If you were going to join me, I wanted 6 months of paychecks and expenses saved up in the business. That took some work to get to. It took work to pay off the debt and save all the money to have a cushion."

Today’s conversation was inspired by an Instagram Live we recently did with Sophie Amelia Designs to chat about working together as spouses. We’re breaking down the practical ways we planned for and transitioned Davey, from full time high school teacher to master marketer.

Today’s episode is sponsored by BDOW!, formerly Sumo, the very best intelligent form and pop-up tool for your website. Deliver the right message, to the right visitor, using our advanced targeting rules. Whether you want to display a pop-up to only new visitors, or generate a unique discount code for those who subscribe to your list, you can get the job done using BDOW!

One of my personal favorite features is the Showit tab function. Basically how this works is when visitors close the pop-up, it minimizes to the bottom of the page so that visitors can open it back up if they’d like, but it also remains out of their way while they browse. You can check out how that feature works over at the Davey and Krista website.

We’re sharing

  • what worked in the transition
  • what didn’t
  • what we’d do differently if we did this process again

This topic is something we’re asked about quite frequently and if you’ve ever considered what it would be like to work with your spouse, I think you’re going to get a lot out of today’s episode.

0:00 – Intro
7:37 – What was one of the first steps in making this transition for Davey to join you full time?
10:20 – Next, we assessed new expenses such as health care.
11:06 – Do as much as possible, prior to making the shift.
11:58 – Skills from one career, can be brought into the next.
14:56 – Establish and experiment with different roles.
15:53 – You need to own your task.
17:47 – Establish rhythms early on.
20:28 – What has changed since having kids?

    Meet Davey & Krista

We've spent 15+ years designing brands and websites for creative businesses — and paying close attention to what actually works.

Every template we've built is informed by real client projects, real conversion data, and a deep understanding of what makes someone go from browsing to booking. We don't just design for beautiful. We design for what happens after someone lands on your page.

That's why our templates don't just come with files. They come with the guidance to use them — writing prompts, launch checklists, and systems that take you from purchase to published.

We also teach. Our designer courses are where we train the next generation of designers, and DesignEdit is our newsletter for working creatives who want to stay ahead of AI. All of it comes from the same place: the belief that good design should make your business feel lighter, not harder.
