BTB Episode 98: Contracts and Handling Difficult Client Situations

Brands that Book Show

Magi Fischer, The Artists' Lawyer

“You’re going to want to issue a cancellation agreement which states that you’re both releasing each other from the rest of the contract. So the photographer or the vendor is no longer liable for holding that date and the client is no longer responsible for the payment schedule if there’s any future payments. Then you’re going to just want to make a note too, that the retainer is not refundable or any monies that have paid, if they’re not refundable, then that’s part of the contract.”

Today’s guest is Magi Fisher, The Artists’ Lawyer of Magifisher.com, where you can find legal resources for your creative business. Magi joins me for a conversation on contracts and difficult client situations, specifically we’re covering a few tough client situations that can be avoided or dealt with using a well-crafted contract.

You should contact your attorney to obtain advice with respect to any particular issue or problem you’re facing. And while Magi is a lawyer, she’s not your lawyer.

More about Magi

Magi is a lawyer, educator, photographer, storyteller, traveler, and entrepreneur. Her journey has taken her from photographing professional surfers while swimming in some of the world’s most epic waves to receiving a Juris Doctorate from Rutgers Law. If she’s not photographing a wedding with her husband, Scott, in a remote locale, managing her team of Associate Photographers, or providing legal counsel to creative business owners, she’s probably eating an acai bowl, chasing her pup, Arti, around the beach, or watching SVU reruns in her bungalow.

We've spent 15+ years designing brands and websites for creative businesses—and paying close attention to what actually works.

Every template we've built is informed by real client projects, real conversion data, and a deep understanding of what makes someone go from browsing to booking. We don't just design for beautiful. We design for what happens after someone lands on your page.

That's why our templates don't just come with files. They come with the guidance to use them—writing prompts, launch checklists, and systems that take you from purchase to published.

We also teach. Our designer courses are where we train the next generation of designers, and DesignEdit is our newsletter for working creatives who want to stay ahead of AI. All of it comes from the same place: the belief that good design should make your business feel lighter, not harder.
