8 Easy Steps to Creating a Pop-Up

Want to generate more leads and sales on your website?

Add a BDOW! pop-up. 

This easy-to-create, highly targeted pop-up quickly earned us $10k on our website. 

No, this is not a gimmicky, get-rich-quick hack. 

Rather, it’s a strategic addition you can make to your website to generate quantifiable leads.  

We created a video tutorial that explains in eight easy steps how to set up a BDOW! pop-up for your website and specific needs. 

In this video, we created a pop-up form to target only new users who hadn’t subscribed before. We also customized it so that if someone had already seen the pop-up, it wouldn’t re-appear for quite some time.

What is a pop-up?

First things first, what is a pop-up? It is the small window or banner that often appears on your screen promoting a message as you scroll through a website, hence the term “pop-up.” 

The main purpose of a pop-up is to capture the viewer’s attention and prompt an action. This action can be anything from a newsletter sign-up to a promo code opportunity.

8 Steps to Create a BDOW! Pop-up

1. Set Up a BDOW! Account 

If you have not signed up for a BDOW! account yet, this is your first step. Create an account at bdow.com and save 50% on your first year using the code DAVEYANDKRISTA. 

You will also need to install the BDOW! code on your website. This is easy, and you can follow the tutorial here: Install BDOW!

If you are using WooCommerce on your website, you need to sync the BDOW! plugin to WooCommerce.

Once you’ve done this, you’re ready to open BDOW! and start creating your new pop-up. 

2. Create A New Campaign

Open your BDOW! Dashboard and click the Campaigns tab at the top. Then select the Create a New Campaign button. 

Choose your campaign goal from the list provided. For this tutorial, we selected “Collect Emails” because lead generation is essential to client conversion.

Then choose Pop-Up as your form type. (Note: BDOW! offers a variety of forms, including click-triggers, scroll boxes, and more)

Next, it’s time to choose your design. Scroll through the BDOW! predesigned pop-up templates and select one that provides the best starting point for your brand. 

Don’t worry about finding a perfect fit, you’ll have ample opportunity to customize your design in the next step. 

3. Customize Your Pop-Up Design

This is where the fun begins! You’ll notice two tabs on the top of your design, Subscribe and Success

We’ll start on the Subscribe tab, where we customize the first part of your pop-up design. 

Using the left toolbar, customize your pop-up design to match your brand colors. You can type your hex code directly into the color background box to have a perfect match.

Everything in the pop-up editor is drag-and-drop, so you can easily change the text – editing font, size, placement, etc. – simply by moving your cursor. You can also add images to your pop-up! 

Play around with the design until you find a combination you love. And remember: Brand consistency is important across all elements of your website, including pop-ups!

4. Customize Your Coupon Code

Now, it’s time to customize the Success tab of your pop-up, which is where you create the coupon code. 

First, use the left sidebar to change the size and color of your Success tab to match the size and color of your Subscribe tab. You may also want to customize the ‘close out X’ to match as well. 

Using the left sidebar, click on your button and specify your Click Action. We recommend selecting Redirect to and then linking to your specific shop or page. 

Use your cursor to click on the text box and type text to match your brand voice and provide clear direction. For example, our tutorial pop-up says Success! Shop the sites. 

If you’d like to add a new text box or element, simply click on the Add New button at the top of your design. It will provide a drop-down menu with multiple options.

You will also want to change the fonts to match your brand. BDOW! has quite a few Google fonts available, making font selection easy.

5. Add Your Discount 

To add your discount code, click on the Add New button at the top of your design and select Discount Code from the drop-down menu. 

If you already have discount codes, BDOW! will pull them for you. To create a new discount code, click the Create New button at the bottom. Fill in the name, discount percentage, dates, requirements, and additional details. 

Click Save and then select that code to use in your pop-up. 

6. Fine Tune the Visibility 

Now that your pop-up is ready to go, it’s time to decide who sees your pop-up and when they see it! 

Click the Next button on the bottom left sidebar of your screen. This will take you to a new page that shows visibility options. Adjust the visibility and timing to fit your particular needs – how frequently your pop-up appears, which pages of your website it appears on, who sees it, and more. 

You can also add individuals who subscribe via your pop-up to a specific email list or group. 

7. Connect to a Third Party Email Service

If you want to add pop-up subscribers to a specific email list or group, you need to connect to a third-party email service. BDOW! makes this connection a breeze, listing several different platforms, such as Kit, Flodesk, etc.

8. Publish + Enjoy More Leads

Hit publish! Once your BDOW! pop-up is installed on your site, sit back and enjoy as the leads and sales roll in.
