Custom Brand & Website Design: Josiah & Steph Photography

We had so much fun working with Josiah & Steph on their new brand and website! As we started exploring their business and their lives, we realized the importance movies play in their relationship. From the time they were dating to the present day, watching movies has always been one of the main ways Josiah & Steph spend time together. Josiah’s family even speaks in movie quotes (which is super impressive BTW because I remember almost no lines from movies).  

Since Josiah and Steph are both photographers and photographers, we decided to tie their brand into their love of stories. A contemporary art-deco feel (a subtle nod to old Hollywood), as well as movie quotes peppered throughout their site hint at their love of movies without being too kitchy.

We asked Josiah + Steph to share a bit about themselves and the branding process:

Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get started in photography?
We are Josiah & Steph, a husband and wife wedding photography team from the suburbs of Philadelphia. Steph grew up shooting film photography with her great grandfather and I took some art and photography classes throughout middle school and high school. It wasn’t until we were asked in 2013 to photograph a friend’s wedding that we actually started taking it seriously. 2014 was when we officially launched Josiah & Steph Photography with just 3 weddings booked. We made almost no money that year but we knew we loved photography and specifically wedding photography. A few years later, I’m full time in our business and we’re shooting weddings nearly every weekend. It’s truly a dream come true.

Why did you decide to redesign your website?
We decided to redesign and rebrand our website and business because of a few reasons. The first was that we’ve never had anyone else help us in the design process. It was always a DIY project where we’d create everything ourselves. I have some design background and experience, but when it comes to creating a visible brand based on who we really are rather than who we might want to be is very difficult. We knew that Davey & Krista would be able to target and pinpoint exactly who we are and transfer it into our website and branding. The second reason we did the redesign was because we were moving up in the market. Our pricing has increased and we’re offering more services. We needed a brand that matched our pricing and what we were offering. Since we just started delivering highlight films to our clients along with photography, the new website needed to weave our love for cinema throughout it’s pages while still creating a space that balanced both photo and video. Davey & Krista completely hit the mark!

What is your favorite part of your new site?
Narrowing down our favorite part of the website is like asking us to choose our favorite movie! It changes on a day to day basis. We love all of the little film quotes that are sprinkled throughout, but we also love the way the blog looks now, and the galleries. Everything just feels so cohesive and it just makes us smile when we look at it! We are so excited to see how this new brand and website will help our business grow.

Is there anything else you think people considering re-designing their website should know?
If you’re considering a redesign and/or a rebrand, get ready to do a lot of thinking and brainstorming! It really is a full on self reflection of who you are and who your business is for a solid 2-3 months. Davey & Krista really challenged us to figure out who we were and I think all good designers should be doing that for their clients because it’s invaluable. If you’re choosing to redesign your website, I think the most important decision you can make is choosing a designer with whom you’ll mesh well and who will completely get you. We trusted Davey & Krista from the very beginning. That trust made the design process so simple. Find a designer that is a good fit for you and that you trust wholeheartedly because it will really make a huge difference in your new brand and website.
