How to Create a Video Reel of Static Content Using Photoshop

Expand Your Reach

filed in

If you’ve logged into Instagram recently, you’ve probably noticed that Instagram recently made a big switch to prioritize video content.

I just scrolled through my feed and out of ten posts, three were static images and the rest were video. I also saw three ads just in that short scroll.

So what does that mean for you? It likely means that if you want your content to be seen on social media, you’re going to need to create some more video content.

But if your business doesn’t lend itself naturally to video or you don’t want to dance (or even show your face) on camera, you can still pull together your content in a few ways that turns it into engaging video content.

And not only can you use these videos on Instagram as reels or stories, you can also share these videos as idea pins or static pins on Pinterest. Because, you guessed it, Pinterest is also prioritizing videos.

Option 1: Use a Stock Video

Companies like Pexels have a plethora of stock videos. One easy trick to turn what would otherwise have been a static image into video content is to add text overtop of a video and export it as a video.

  1. Open up a photoshop file that is 1080 x 1920 pixels.
  2. Create an area with your title text.
  3. Open up your video file and copy the video into the document.
  4. Turn on the video timeline and adjust settings.
  5. Export your video file via Render Video as an MP4.

Option 2: Turn a series of content “slides” into a video

  1. Break up your content into a series of image “slides” using software like Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva or Sketch (our preferred design app).
  2. Export those individual slides as images.
  3. Upload the images to Photoshop and merge the files into a single, layered file.
  4. Turn on the video timeline and adjust settings.
  5. Export your video file via Render Video as an MP4.

If we’re uploading this video to Instagram or TikTok, we add the audio in those apps, but otherwise these files are ready to be shared.

I’m having issues actually getting the video into Photoshop. I’m using the newest imac and photshop 2022…any advice? The layer > video layer option is no longer available and I can’t open with or place the video. Thanks!

    Meet Davey & Krista

We've spent 15+ years designing brands and websites for creative businesses — and paying close attention to what actually works.

Every template we've built is informed by real client projects, real conversion data, and a deep understanding of what makes someone go from browsing to booking. We don't just design for beautiful. We design for what happens after someone lands on your page.

That's why our templates don't just come with files. They come with the guidance to use them — writing prompts, launch checklists, and systems that take you from purchase to published.

We also teach. Our designer courses are where we train the next generation of designers, and DesignEdit is our newsletter for working creatives who want to stay ahead of AI. All of it comes from the same place: the belief that good design should make your business feel lighter, not harder.
