Interview with Caleb Curtisi

"A lot of it has been trial and error. I haven't been woodworking that long, I started in 2020. I'm still learning techniques as I go. I expect something to take me X and it takes 5X. Definitely trial and error, which I learn by the end of the project that I should have charged more for the project."

This week’s episode features artist, Caleb Curtisi, of Curtisi Co. Caleb is a woodworker and I met Caleb earlier this year in Arizona, while visiting some friends out at Showit HQ. It was fascinating learning about his business. While he spent years working on his craft, he’s only taken his business full time, this past year. From the outside looking in, it seems like he’s avoided many pitfalls that many new business owners fall into.

I wanted to ask him more about things like, “How he took his business full time?”, “Where he found his first few clients and how he continues to regularly find clients?”, “How he developed his pricing strategy?” Pricing, in particular, is something so many creative people struggle with when they get started.

It doesn’t really matter what industry you’re in, if you’re looking to take your business full time, there are all sorts of lesson that can be learned from Caleb’s experience.

Is there anything more satisfying than taking raw materials, designing a preferred future, and then taking to steps to turn that vision into reality? As an entrepreneur and artist, Caleb was born with this innate drive to create & build whether it’s a business or a bespoke dining set. 

Caleb’s woodworking journey began in 9th grade woodshop class with a pencil box. These days, every project is designed to transcend functionality and be an expression of beauty. He works with solid wood because of its organic nature that brings warmth and authenticity into living spaces.

Our souls are shaped by what we give our attention to, which is why Caleb’s desire is to intentionally place beauty in our path.
